Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe is a story about personal beliefs and customs, and also a story about conflict. There is struggle between family, culture, and the religion of the Ibo, which is all brought on by a difference in personal beliefs and customs of the Igbo and the British. There are also strong opinions of the main character, Okonkwo. We are then introduced to the views of his village, Umuofia. We see how things fall apart when these beliefs and customs are confronted by those of the white missionaries. The authors full name is, Albert Chinualumogu Achebe also known as Chinua, he was born on November 16, 1930 in Ogidi, Nigeria. The Ibo people considered these things signs of success. Yet, his greatest goal was his desire to become one of the powerful elders of the clan. It is Okonkwos inner anger and bitterness over his fathers failure that seemed to be the driving force behind everything he did in life. This was evident in the fact that he always felt as though he had to do what was manly and he hated weakness. Just as Okonkwo did not want to be like his father, Nwoye did not want to be like Okonkwo. Nwoye possessed traits that Okonkwo did not such as gentleness, forgiveness, and acceptance. Okonkwo saw these as signs of weakness. Okonkwo never showed any emotion openly, unless it be the emotion of anger. To show affecti on was a sign of weakness; the only thing worth demonstrating was strength (Achebe 28). Okonkwo considered Nwoye to be lazy and wanted him to be a success like himself. Okonkwo wanted his son to be a great farmer and a great man. . . . I will not have a son who cannot hold up his head in the gathering of the clan. I would sooner strangle him with my own hands (Achebe 33). This is an example of the difference in personal beliefs among family. Walcheren, a small Dutch island at the Western end of the Beveland Peninsula was the setting for one of the most underrated but critical engagements of the second world war. The summer of 1944 had saw a series of almost unprecedented successes by allied forces in northwestern Europe. The Normandy landings in June had been followed by the breakout from the beachhead and an advance of some 300 miles eastward across France to the low countries. By early October the tempo of operations had slackened. The attempt in September to jump the lower Rhine at Arnhem (Op MARKET GARDEN) with airborne troops had failed. It looked as if the battlefront would remain west of the Rhine for the winter and that the war would last well into 1945. The key to the supply problems was the port of Antwerp, captured with its dock facilities only slightly damaged in September 1944. It was 50 miles from the sea and could not be used by the allied shipping until the heavily mined Scheldt estuary had been made safe, but the Allied eyes were on the Rhine crossings at Arnhem, not the lower Scheldt. By mid October the allies held most of the mainland forming the southern bank of the estuary, but the Germans still held the island of Walcheren, which guarded the port entrance. It was a matter of urgency for the allies to use Antwerp as the supply problem threatened the to curtail the allied plan of prosecuting the war on a wide front. The Razor In â€Å"Moby Dick,† by Herman Melville, he writes about multiple gams between Captain Ahab’s ship, the Pequod, and other ships, yet because of Ahab’s selfishness, these meetings do not last a while unless there is information to be gathered about Moby Dick’s whereabouts. This differs from Melville’s novella, or short story, â€Å"Benito Cereno,† in which Captain Delano’s ship, the Bachelor’s Delight, have a gam with Benito Cereno and his ship, the San Dominick. We see a major difference in how Ahab acts and how Captain Delano acts in their meetings with other ships because of Delano’s willingness to help, but this good trait of his is what makes â€Å"Benito Cereno† such a good story. Some of these rebellion hints include the captives, or slaves, being free from chains, and slaves slashing axes together. The biggest hint though is the razor that Babo shaves Benito Cereno. The razor is very important in this novella because it ties the entire story together as well as signifies multiple things such as power and fear. The razor symbolizes power, and even perhaps the balance of powers, because this is the first instance in which Babo, one of the slaves onboard the San Dominick, shows his dominance over Benito Cereno by keeping the razor close to Cereno’s neck and eventually cutting his cheek. When this â€Å"accident† happens, we hear no apology from Babo, only, â€Å"See master- you shook so- here’s Babo’s first blood,† (Melville, p210), which shows that he might have meant to cut Cereno, but also that Babo is willing to make Cereno, and perhaps the rest of his oppressors, bleed more. This is important because Babo draws the first blood and the balance of power is possibly beginning to change through harming Benito Cereno physically and mentally. Although the razor represents power, it also represents the other side of the coin, being fear. Because Babo holds down Benito Cereno with a razor to his throat, Cereno knows he is in Babo’s full control. This evokes a fear from Cereno, knowing that his life could potentially be at stake, especially since Captain Delano is oblivious to the fact that the San Dominick has been taken over by the captured slaves. Not only do we see fear while the razor is close to Cereno’s throat, but when Babo cuts him, we see him become very frightful of what might happen. Melville writes,† No sword drawn before James the First of England, no assassination in that timid king’s presence, could have produced a more terrified aspect than was now presented by Don Benito,† (Melville, p 210) which shows that Cereno is scared that he might be killed, but yet is still frightened of the little blood of his that Babo spilled. Fear plays a major role in â€Å"Benito Cereno† because of the fact that Don Benito has already experienced the slave revolt on the San Dominick, and could be killed momentarily if he makes one mistake. The razor keeps him in line during his conversation with Captain Delano because he fears what Babo could do to him if he makes one mistake. The razor not only symbolizes the balance of power as well as evil, but it is also meaningful in â€Å"Benito Cereno† because it ties the entire story together. First off, because the razor symbolizes power, we can relate this to Senegal, the place that Babo and the rest of the slaves are forcing Cereno to sail to for their freedom, back to their rightful home. This place could also be considered weak because of the people that are forced from their homes into the slave trade, and now the balance of powers is shifting. At one point during this journey, Benito Cereno was in full control of the slaves, bringing them to Lima, but now, Babo and the slaves that once lost their humanly rights, are now in control over the man who kidnapped them. The razor signifies this changing of power because in that scene we see that Babo is holding it to Cereno’s neck and not vice versa. Just like above, the razor to the neck of Don Benito signifies fear, but can also be connected to Cape Horn, which represents suspicion and lies. Fear and Cape Horn can be connected to one another because not knowing what something, or someone, might be can be frightening. As basic as this may sound, it is true because Cereno fears what Babo might do to him next, after cutting his cheek with the razor. As little as the razor may be, it plays a big role metaphorically and literally. The razor is obviously used by Babo to shave Cereno, and while doing this, Babo cuts Cereno, asserting his control and putting fear into his enemy. The razor completes the story of â€Å"Benito Cereno† because without it, blood would not be spilled, showing the slaves’ newly acquired dominance over their oppressors, which is best shown with a razor to the neck. Drinks were also ranked on the basis of first preference, second preference, third preference and fourth preference. Each of the variety of drink are being ranked in the said way and recorded. Again, there is another column in the data set on whether the students will change their preferences if being offered a discount. There are answers for 25 % discount and 40 % discount. The data management are tallie4d and calculated in excel and the results are written below. Required answers are: A sample of 80 students is being collected randomly from the college. They were being collected irrespective of domestic and international students. Proportion of national students in the sample is 0.92 and proportion of international students in the sample is 0.075. It can be seen from the dataset that with an increase in price, there is a decrease in the average quantity of drinks consumed (Rahayu and Wahyudi 2017). The rest of the drinks are being consumed at a much lower quantity management. In case of 25% reduction in cost, a proportion of 0.175 students are expected to change their brand and a proportion of 0.825 students are expected not to change their brand (Jackson et al. 2016). Again in case of 40% reduction in cost, a proportion of 0.50 student are expected to change their brand preference. Simultaneously, a proportion of 0.50 students are expected not to change their brand. There is no difference between demands of international students and that of national students (Xiao and Jiang 2017). In case of domestic students, consumption goes down as price goes up. Again in the case in international students, demand goes down as consumption goes up. Therefore, both are the same. It can be said here that international students mostly prefer fruit juice and others like water and milk drinks. Again, domestic students are said to prefer other drinks the most that is water and milk drinks. Soft drinks can be taken to be preferred in the second position. It is likely that a proportion of 0.2125 students will choose soft drinks as their first preferences (Von Mises 2016). An upper and a lower interval can be calculated here based on the preferences. The lower interval is -0.128 and the higher interval is 0.553. The average preferences range in expected to vary within this interval.
